NEW HAVEN POLICE CONTINUE INVESTIGATION INTO WEEKEND DRAG RACING FATALITY
(8/18/2008) NEW HAVEN- At 1:19 a.m. Sunday, New Haven Police responded to a call stating that two individuals were struck by a vehicle in a drag race in the area of Long Wharf Drive and Canal Dock Road. The vehicle responsible fled the scene after fatally injuring 23-year-old Misael Ruiz, an East Haven resident. A 17-year-old sustained minor injuries and was treated at an area hospital.
“This is a tragic incident that speaks to the danger of drag racing and reckless operation of motor vehicles on our streets,” said Chief James Lewis. “We won’t tolerate this type of behavior in New Haven. We will continue to work with the City and the community to make our streets safer for everyone.”
New Haven Police have since located the vehicle involved in the incident and are speaking with the vehicle’s owner. No arrests have been made at this time. No media events on this issue are planned for today.
